A new screening process will affect citizens from over 60 countries

In mid-to-late 2023, U.S. citizens and nationals of over 60 other countries will need an electronic travel authorization to visit much of Europe.

Travelers to any Schengen-zone country will have to register with a European Travel Information and Authorization System . ETIAS will be similar to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization already used in the United States.

How will it work?

Most travelers have no need to worry. The process will involve a quick online application and a 7.00 credit card payment. According to the European Commission, ETIAS will be a simple, fast and visitor-friendly system, which will, in more than 95% of cases, result in a positive answer within a few minutes.

The authorization will be valid for unlimited entries within a three-year period – or until the date of the applicants passport expiry, whichever is sooner – so travelers who frequent Europe wont need to apply every time. Without a visa , U.S. citizens will still need to limit their travel to 90 days within any 180-day period . Those seeking to travel for purposes such as work or study will still require a visa.

Italys tourism feels back in full force and daily life has resumed as normal. Some people wear masks in grocery stores or other public areas but not many.

We flew into Florence, Italy and took trains through Tuscany in September. To enter Italy, we only needed our passports. Air Dolomiti airlines required masks on the flight.

The Florence airport tram into town had signs that masks were required but maybe 50% of people were masked. Around Florence, it is as busy as ever and highly recommended to make reservations for big attractions in advance. Masks were still required on the regional trains in Italy, enforced by staff and audio announcements. Otherwise, tourism does seem back to normal.

I flew today to Rome from Croatia. They didnt ask for anything covid related. No test or vax cards. But we had to wear N95 mask on the plane, thats it.

May 2022 Lyndsay at Ive been living in Italy and exploring the country for six months now, and the past few days were the busiest Ive seen the cities! As the weather gets warmer, were expecting an uptick in tourism, which is definitely what Ive encountered so far. Tourists are eager to experience la dolce vita again!

Traveling to a destination, like Italy, where you dont need a visa is important right now because it adds flexibility to your trip. And if you do have to postpone or cancel your vacay, you wont be irked by wasted time and money spent on obtaining a visa.

Italy has decided to eliminate its Covid-tested protocol for arrivals from the United States, a month after travel from the US was approved on these types of flights. The upcoming flights will now only have to follow the standard requirements when entering the country.

The Governments new measures for US travellers entered into force on June 21, only three days after the European Union added the United Stated to the white list of countries due to low infections and rapid vaccination rates.

In line with the EUs recommendation, European Union Member States now are allowed to lift their travel restrictions for vaccinated and unvaccinated Americans, reports.

However, in order to meet the new conditions for entering Italy, US travellers must present proof of vaccination. At least 14 days should have passed since the last dose of the vaccine has been administered to be allowed entry into the country.

Italian officials noted that the vaccination certificates issued by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention will be accepted.

Travellers from the US can also present a negative COVID-19 test result carried out within 48 hours of departure or proof of previous recovery from the virus.

As long as the US travellers present one of the three forms of documentation, they will not be subject to the quarantine requirement after arriving in Italy.

Covid-tested flights from the US to Italy were only operated by two airlines, Delta and Alitalia.

How Has The Coronavirus Impacted Italy

Italy was the first country in Europe affected by COVID-19 and was hit hard by the outbreak, requiring strict lock downs. Another large spike in cases occurred at the end of October 2020. A nationwide state of emergency continued through 2022.

Italys economy, which includes a large tourism sector, has faced its deepest recession in history. More than 200,000 tourism-related jobs were discontinued in Italy by the end of 2021 accounting for a massive shortage of workers in the country.

In May 2021, Italy formally opened its borders to international travelers from select countries to revive tourism. In June, Italy eased its restrictions for international travelers, then tightened somewhat due to the Delta variant and Omicron variant.

Italys state of emergency ended on March 31, 2022.

Italy obtains its vaccines via an EU procurement program. On December 27, 2020, Italy vaccinated the first residents against COVID-19. Currently, three quarters of Italians are fully vaccinated.

For the current situation in Italy, including: total COVID-19 positive cases daily number of cases in Italy and COVID-19 recovery rates in Italy, please see the statistics here.

ITALY TRAVEL GUIDE: How to see Italy in 7 Days! (2022)

You’re only allowed to visit Italy for a duration that does not exceed 90 days in 180 days. In addition, you must not overstay and must return to the USA after your trip. If you overstay, you may face some unwanted consequences.

Immigration authorities record each person who enters and leaves the Schengen Area âbecause of this, overstaying will not go unnoticed. Overstaying in a Schengen Country like Italy could lead to deportation, a heavy fine, or even a ban. In addition, you must abide by the 90/180-day rule.

Suppose you plan a longer stay in Italy. In that case, you’ll need to apply for another type of visa that allows an extended stay. This type of visa is typically known as a National Visa or long-term/long-stay visa. These can include Study Visas, Work Visas, Residence Permits, etc.

Can I Travel To Italy From The Us

The new DPCM categorizes countries into 6 groups: A, B, C, D, E and F. The United States currently falls into category E, Rest of the world. There are restrictions for those traveling to Italy from a country listed in category E, like the U.S., unless they and their family members are Italian, EU, and Schengen citizens, and those with residence permits.

What this means is that, technically, Italy is not open to tourism for Americans traveling directly from the USA. Visitors to Italy cannot leave from or pass through an E-list country within the 14 days prior to their trip to Italy. If you do travel to Italy, your reason must fall into at least one pre-approved reason, which includes but arent limited to:

  • proven work reasons
  • return to ones home, domicile or residence

Youll see that tourism is not an approved reason for U.S. citizens in this scenario. If you travel to Italy for one of the pre-approved reasons, you are required to fill out a self-declaration form prior to departure. You may also have to provide evidence of the reason you select and self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival, among other protocols.
