In mid-to-late 2023, U.S. citizens and nationals of over 60 other countries will need an electronic travel authorization to visit much of Europe.
Travelers to any Schengen-zone country will have to register with a European Travel Information and Authorization System . ETIAS will be similar to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization already used in the United States.
How will it work?
Most travelers have no need to worry. The process will involve a quick online application and a 7.00 credit card payment. According to the European Commission, ETIAS will be a simple, fast and visitor-friendly system, which will, in more than 95% of cases, result in a positive answer within a few minutes.
The authorization will be valid for unlimited entries within a three-year period – or until the date of the applicants passport expiry, whichever is sooner – so travelers who frequent Europe wont need to apply every time. Without a visa , U.S. citizens will still need to limit their travel to 90 days within any 180-day period . Those seeking to travel for purposes such as work or study will still require a visa.

We flew into Florence, Italy and took trains through Tuscany in September. To enter Italy, we only needed our passports. Air Dolomiti airlines required masks on the flight.
The Florence airport tram into town had signs that masks were required but maybe 50% of people were masked. Around Florence, it is as busy as ever and highly recommended to make reservations for big attractions in advance. Masks were still required on the regional trains in Italy, enforced by staff and audio announcements. Otherwise, tourism does seem back to normal.
I flew today to Rome from Croatia. They didnt ask for anything covid related. No test or vax cards. But we had to wear N95 mask on the plane, thats it.

Italy has decided to eliminate its Covid-tested protocol for arrivals from the United States, a month after travel from the US was approved on these types of flights. The upcoming flights will now only have to follow the standard requirements when entering the country.
The Governments new measures for US travellers entered into force on June 21, only three days after the European Union added the United Stated to the white list of countries due to low infections and rapid vaccination rates.
In line with the EUs recommendation, European Union Member States now are allowed to lift their travel restrictions for vaccinated and unvaccinated Americans, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
However, in order to meet the new conditions for entering Italy, US travellers must present proof of vaccination. At least 14 days should have passed since the last dose of the vaccine has been administered to be allowed entry into the country.
Italian officials noted that the vaccination certificates issued by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention will be accepted.
Travellers from the US can also present a negative COVID-19 test result carried out within 48 hours of departure or proof of previous recovery from the virus.
As long as the US travellers present one of the three forms of documentation, they will not be subject to the quarantine requirement after arriving in Italy.
Covid-tested flights from the US to Italy were only operated by two airlines, Delta and Alitalia.

How Has The Coronavirus Impacted Italy

The new DPCM categorizes countries into 6 groups: A, B, C, D, E and F. The United States currently falls into category E, Rest of the world. There are restrictions for those traveling to Italy from a country listed in category E, like the U.S., unless they and their family members are Italian, EU, and Schengen citizens, and those with residence permits.
What this means is that, technically, Italy is not open to tourism for Americans traveling directly from the USA. Visitors to Italy cannot leave from or pass through an E-list country within the 14 days prior to their trip to Italy. If you do travel to Italy, your reason must fall into at least one pre-approved reason, which includes but arent limited to:
- proven work reasons
- return to ones home, domicile or residence
Youll see that tourism is not an approved reason for U.S. citizens in this scenario. If you travel to Italy for one of the pre-approved reasons, you are required to fill out a self-declaration form prior to departure. You may also have to provide evidence of the reason you select and self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival, among other protocols.
Best Time To Visit Italy
Italy is overcrowded during the summer season, from May to August.
