Do You Need To Be Vaccinated To Travel To Italy

What Are The Rules On Wearing Masks In Italy

Will you need a vaccine passport to travel?

While countries like the UK have now lifted rules on wearing masks in public places, it is important to remember that this is still a requirement in Italy. Although you no longer need to wear a mask outdoors, there are strict rules on wearing masks indoors for anyone over the age of five.

If you use public transport or visit theatres, concert halls, cinemas and sports events in Italy before 31st March, you will need an FFP2 grade mask, as a standard face covering will not be accepted.

Public Spaces And Services

The use of FFP2 masks is no longer compulsory on public transport.

Until at least 31 October, the use of FFP2 masks are compulsory when visiting healthcare facilities such as hospitals and care homes.

Mask wearing is still recommended in all indoor public spaces. You should pay close attention to signage when travelling and carry a mask with you at all times. Children aged 5 and under do not need to wear a mask.

To visit or accompany inpatients on a hospital ward or care home, you will require:

  • a booster dose OR
  • a primary vaccination course AND a negative test OR
  • a COVID-19 recovery certificate AND a negative test

Check with the wards health director before visiting as requirements may vary.

You can use a Green Pass , also known as an EU digital COVID-19 certificate, to certify vaccination, recovery or negative test result.

Italy will accept the UKs proof of COVID-19 recovery and vaccination record as the equivalent to a Green or Super Green Pass as long as it is in the form of a verifiable QR code.

You can also obtain a Green Pass valid for 48 hours by testing negative to a rapid COVID-19 test available from local pharmacies and test centres.

Children aged 11 and under are exempt from presenting a Green Pass and Super Green Pass.

Anyone falsifying a certificate is liable to face a fine of up to 3000 or a prison sentence.

Travelling To Italy In Winter 2021 Amid Covid

With the number of hospitalizations dropping in Italy and with the vaccination rates increasing each day, the COVID-19 situation has somewhat improved in the country.

However, the country is currently in an emergency state as it emerged from a lockdown that lasted for a couple of months after battling with a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though the country has shown positive figures, its unclear whether the emergency state will end anytime soon as the new COVID-19 Omicron variant has already reached Italy.

In order to keep the Coronavirus situation under control, Italy launched its EU COVID-19 Passport on June 15, which means that the country has long ago started to issue and accept proof of vaccination, proof of recovery, or negative COVID test certificates.

Nonetheless, due to the widespread of the virus and the detection of the new Omicron variant, the country has made several modifications regarding the entry rules as well as the documents that are required in order to be permitted entry to the country.

If you are planning to travel to Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic, heres what you need to know and expect.
